A Spectre Is Haunting Europe is a socio-political travelogue with elements of stylized reportage. It offers a complex portrait of contemporary Europe, in the context of its current social tensions, and historical traumas.
Through a mosaic structure, it is composed of both dramatic events and carefully premeditated scenes creating a fragmented yet cohesive image of the continent. It moves across Europe and its shifting landscapes, capturing moments that reveal the boundaries of fear and identity. The film does not follow a conventional narrative structure but unfolds rhizomatically, through a non-linear interconnection of places, voices, and situations.
The film explores these tensions and the viewer finds themselves at Europe's largest nationalist demonstration in Warsaw, witnessing the commemoration of the Allied landing in Normandy, walking through the burning streets of Tbilisi. It culminates on the Greek island of Lesbos, a place of refuge for people on the move, carrying with them nothing but dreams and hopes for a new life.
This visual testimony is complemented by a multi-layered experimental commentary from individuals differing in social background, perspectives, and geographical origins. The film reflects on fear and European identity and, rather than providing simple answers, invites the viewer into discussion and reflection.
